Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive treatment for varicose veins, primarily used in the early stages of venous disease and for smaller, superficial, and aesthetically disturbing veins. The ideal time for sclerotherapy is autumn and winter, but the procedure can be performed successfully all year round. Initial changes may be noticeable from one month, although in some cases the final result may take longer to develop.

This is an evidence-based and widely used technique that improves both the appearance of the legs and overall comfort, without the need for surgical intervention.

During the procedure, a precise dose of a special, body-safe medication called a sclerosant is injected into the unwanted vein. As a result, the vein walls adhere to each other, the vein stops functioning, and gradually closes. Over time, the closed vein is naturally absorbed by the body and becomes visually unnoticeable.

The decision regarding the necessity of sclerotherapy, the number of treatment sessions, and the treatment volume is made by a physician after a personal consultation, based on the condition of the patient’s veins and individual treatment needs.

Results of sclerotherapy:

As a result of the treatment:

  • the dilated vein closes
  • the vein is no longer visible or functional
  • the appearance of the legs becomes more even

Depending on the size and extent of the treated blood vessels, results may appear within a few weeks to three months. In some cases, a noticeable improvement is seen after the first session, but for optimal results, treatment may be carried out in several stages.

How does the procedure work?

Sclerotherapy is an outpatient, quick, and generally painless procedure.

  • In some cases, shaving the treatment area may be necessary prior to the procedure; the physician will inform you in advance if needed.
  • Very fine needles are used, making the procedure well tolerated.
  • The procedure usually lasts 5–10 minutes.
  • The physician punctures the vein and injects the prepared sclerosant, carefully ensuring correct needle placement.

Pain is usually absent, although in rare cases, individuals with sensitive skin may experience a mild burning sensation in the lower legs. Multiple injections can be performed during a single session. If necessary, the physician may recommend wearing compression garments after the procedure to support vein closure and healing.

Sclerotherapy is particularly suitable for:

  • early stages of varicose veins
  • isolated veins with a small diameter
  • protruding and aesthetically disturbing veins

After the procedure

After sclerotherapy, the physician may recommend:

  • walking, in some cases up to 40 minutes continuously at a moderate pace
  • wearing compression stockings, if necessary even around the clock

These recommendations are an essential part of the treatment process and help ensure better and longer-lasting results.
